Stand 21 was established in Dijon-France in 1970 by Yves Morizot. Yves’s vision made Stand 21 the world leader in head to toe, made-to-measure racing gear. The secret of Stand 21's success is due to Yves Morizot’s business model that applied the following strategy: Identify a true need, then Stand 21's in house R&D Department will conceive and develop products that will fill these needs. With 150 employees worldwide, Stand 21 products are hand crafted within Stand 21’s own factories, exceeding the most rigorous safety and medical standards required by the FIA, SFI, the Snell foundation etc. Stand 21 offers its products to race car drivers through its exclusive Stand 21 network. This strategy, based on high business ethics delivers Stand 21 products in over 50 countries. That is why Stand 21 supplies safety equipment to top racing teams in FIA, NHRA, NASCAR, OFF ROAD, and more.
Stand 21 holds the exclusive license for racing drivers’ equipment with Porsche Motorsport and Corvette Racing worldwide.
Yves Morizot dedication to motorsport safety made him create a non-profit foundation that is exclusively dedicated to motorsport safety:
www.racingoessafer.com. This foundation is a bridge between the medical and scientific knowledge and their direct motorsport safety application. By conducting safety conferences with Doctors, Engineers and Professors, the foundation raises motorsport safety awareness through education.
For almost a half century while faithfully applying its philosophy, Stand 21 built and earned impressive safety credentials, thus becoming the top safety choice in motorsport worldwide:
- More than 10 Formula 1 World Championship titles
- 5 Indianapolis-500 wins
- 15 Le Mans 24-hour wins
- 5 Indycar Championship titles
- 2 NHRA Top-Fuel titles
- Several world championship titles in rallying, touring cars… Stand 21 is proud, most importantly, to have earned the trust of thousands of race car drivers worldwide, who have selected Stand 21 as their favored safety brand.
Not bad for a start, but the biggest part is still to be written with you!
Based in Talant, France, the Stand 21 headquarters house the design, development and manufacturing of the full product line to the latest safety standards, as well as the assembly of FHR devices.
Since 2003, Stand 21 India (a fully owned Stand 21 subsidiary) produces mechanic overalls, karting racing suits, team & crew apparel...
In 2006, Stand 21 added manufacturing capability to fully customize shoes and gloves.
More than faster lap times or race wins, safety is what keeps motorsports going. Comfort affects the performance and safety of the racecar driver. In this regard, Stand 21 is committed in finding and testing new materials, options, and processes that will help develop the most ergonomic and safest products. This is why the “Heat Stress” research program began in 2004 and set multiply connections with the medical world, especially through the “Racing Goes Safer” foundation. Because of constant motorsport technical evolution, Stand 21 keeps up with the latest research, developing new products that exceed customer expectations.
It is on the track that Stand 21 has become what it is today: the technical partner of racing drivers concerned with safety and any parameters affecting their performance. For us, in terms of safety, technology and the medical aspect are one. That’s why our R&D department works hand in hand with motorsport medical specialists (MD. Trammell (U.S.A.), Prof. Meistelman (France), Prof. Trafford (UK), Dr. Mineo Kawasaki (Japan)... Thanks to this work ethic and latest-generation manufacturing equipment, Stand 21 products have passed the highest standards in motorsport today (FIA, SNELL, SFI, CIK ...).
21 March 1982 - Jacarepagua – Brazil Grand Prix - Nelson Piquet appears exhausted on the podium after his victory. It is by witnessing this kind of situation that is encountered not only in closed cars racing, that Stand 21 was incited to evolve from the concept of “Passive Safety” to “active” or “proactive Safety gears manufacturer.
We adopted an active approach in managing safety factors related to the dangers of race car driver, that is why in the 80s we developed and used a new fabric which up to now still has exclusive engineering features that captivate immediately back then the interests of all Formula 1 drivers as well as the drivers of other categories. The concept is simple: the more comfortable a racecar driver is inside his safety gear, the safer he will be while increasing his racing performance. The fight against heat stress started.
The "Heat Stress" scientific and medical research program initiated by Stand 21 in 2004 allowed a sophisticated data gathering, resulting in drastically improving the performance of the Stand 21 products to manage heat stress. Stand 21’s heat stress research clearly showed the danger of rising core-body temperature.
As perspiration evaporation is hindered by impermeable fabric layers in underwear and racing suit, the body temperature rises, causing diminishing brain functions and hindering the driver’s ability to control his racing car. This situation arises even when racing in a low-temperature environment.
After Stand 21 published its Heat Stress tests results, most of the participants in the motorsport community became aware that a fire retardant racing suit was not solely a means of protection against fire, or an advertising medium.
A properly engineered suit ventilates the body and can be a key factor in a racecar driver’s overall performance.
As a motor-racing safety source, the Stand 21 “Racing?Goes Safer!” foundation is a non-profit organization (application pending) its primary purpose being of promoting enhanced motorsports safety. It achieves this goal in collaboration with the medical and scientific community, as well as with major series organizations (FIA, SFI, NHRA, SCTA, SCCA, SCORE), to bring awareness of safety issues and solutions to the forefront of the motorsports world.
By gathering and consolidating data and experience collected by sanctioning bodies, universities and medical-research entities, the foundation is dedicated to sharing this information to the Motorsport community worldwide through continuous education.
More than ever, this motorsport safety foundation is of utmost importance, considering the large increase in race car drivers (1970: a few thousands, today over 1.5 million worldwide, most of them amateur drivers).
