Hub seals are the only thing between bearing grease and a track full of dirt, water, and rubber dust. When a seal fails the bearing goes with it, usually taking the hub too. Single lip designs suit grease packing while double lip versions handle oil.
Keeping spares in the trailer is cheap insurance against losing a hub mid-weekend.
