Geoff Ensign Scores First Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series Victory

MAY 5, 2012 - PETALUMA, CA: Defending USAC Western Classic Sprint Car Series Champion Geoff Ensign mastered a unusually dry slick 3/8 mile Petaluma Speedway to capture his first ever winged sprint car victory on Saturday night. Ensign, who has 4 career non-winged sprint car feature wins, made the best of the opportunity to climb aboard Brett Lay’s number 24B Maxim in the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series.

Ensign, the 22 year old Sebastopol, California driver, started on the pole and led the 18 car field flag-to-flag with Sacramento’s Billy Butler hot on his rear bumper throughout the feature. “I knew the only place on the track with any bite, was the bottom,” commented Ensign. Ensign was tenacious in protecting the bottom groove throughout the race keeping the hard charging Butler at bay.

There was a spectacular battle going on behind the top two finishers with Bradley Terrell eventually coming home third. Brett Rollag, who came into the night as the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series point leader, had a spectacular run climbing all the way to fourth from his 13th starting position. Rollag and former Petaluma Speedway track champion David Lindt Jr. battled hard for several laps before finally capturing the position with six laps to go after a late challenge from Trent Canales. Rollag, who scored his first ever California Civil War Sprint Car Series victory just last week at Petaluma, showed that he is going to be a force to be reckoned with for the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series championship.

Trent Canales came home fifth, with fast qualifier Chase Johnson sixth. Adam McCarthy, Kirk Simpson, Matthew Haulot and Lindt Jr. rounded out the top ten.

Heat race wins went to Norm Johns, David Lindt Jr. and Kenny Drew.
